Vaginal Lubrication for Menopausal Women:

What helps enhance sexual experience.

Vaginal dryness is a common symptom experienced by many women during menopause. It occurs due to the decline in estrogen levels, which leads to thinning and inflammation of the vaginal tissues. This can result in discomfort and pain during intercourse. However, there are various lubricants that can help alleviate these symptoms. Here are some options for you to consider:

Water based lubricants: Using a water-based lubricant during sexual activity can reduce friction and discomfort. It’s important to choose a lubricant that is free from irritants and additives that might cause further irritation. Women who use water-based lubricants say these products increase their pleasure and satisfaction during sex. This type of lubricant will not damage latex condoms, and they are less likely to cause vaginal irritation. But be careful and look at ingredients for some lubricants may contain preservatives and additives such as glycerin and perfumes.  These may irritate the sensitive vaginal tissues or cause yeast infections in some women. Water-based Lubricants are easily found in stores, several brands you may look for include: Astroglide, Eros Aqua, K-Y liquid, Liquid silk, Replens, and Slippery stuff.

Silicone-based lubricants: Silicone-based lubricants provide long lasting lubrication and tend to be thicker and more slippery compared to water-based lubricants. There are less likely to dry out quickly, making them particularly useful for menopausal women experiencing vaginal dryness. They work in water and will not affect latex condoms like oil-based products can. Silicone-based lubricants are less likely to irritate you than oil or water-based lubricants.  However, silicon-based lubricants cannot be used with silicon sex toys. They are also expensive and may be hard to find in stores. They also can be difficult to wash off fully with soap and water. Several brands to look for in stores include: Astroglide Diamond Silicone Gel, EROS, and Pure Pleasure.

Hybrid lubricants: Hybrid lubricants combine the properties of water-based and silicone-based lubricants. They typically contain a blend of water and silicone, providing the benefits of both. Hybrid lubricants are often long-lasting and offer a smooth and slippery feel. It’s essential to check the ingredients list to ensure compatibility with your needs and preferences. Remember silicon lubricants cannot be used with silicone type sexual toys.

Plant oil-based lubricants: Plant oil-based lubricants include avocado oil, olive oil, and coconut oil are natural, easily accessible, and has moisturizing properties. These are also good options if you are out of your regular lubricant. However, even natural oils can break down latex condoms, and they can stain fabrics.

Oil-based lubricants: These lubricants can last longer than water-based ones and may also last longer than the plant-based oil lubricants. You cannot use these oil-based lubricants with a latex condom or diaphragm. You can safely use these lubricants with polyurethane condoms. These lubricants include mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and baby oil. These can increase your risk for a urinary tract infection. The oil also stains sheets, underwear, and other fabrics.

Warming lubricants: Warming lubricants add ingredients like menthol and capsaicin to create a warming sensation. Some women report that these enhance sexual sensation which leads to more orgasms. Brands to look for are: K-Y Yours +Mine, K-Y Warming Liquid, Lifestyle Excite, and Zestra. Try these on a small area to the labia first to make certain you do not have a reaction such as excessive burning or stinging sensation.

Remember, personal preference plays a crucial role in determining the best lubricant for enhancing your sexual experience. It is advisable to try different products and see what works best for you.
