Surviving Perimenopause: The Hot, Sweaty and Sometimes Hilarious Truth

August 19, 20254 min read

If you are a woman in your 40s or early 50s, you might have found yourself crying over a cat food commercial or waking up drenched in sweat, wondering if someone swapped your thermostat for a malfunctioning one. Fear not! You are not alone. Welcome to perimenopause- the hormonal rollercoaster that’s as unpredictable as a tornado and can be just as destructive.

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, lasting anywhere from a year to over 10 years. It's like puberty’s less glamorous sibling. Your ovaries begin winding down their production of estrogen and progesterone, along with a decline in testosterone, leading to a host of symptoms that can range from mildly annoying to downright disruptive. Let’s dive into the chaos (and solutions!) of perimenopause.

Symptoms of Perimenopause

  1. Hot Flashes and Night Sweats: Picture this: You are sitting in a meeting or curled up on the couch when, out of nowhere, your body decides to turn up the heat like a faulty radiator. Hot flashes and night sweats are among the most common symptoms, leaving you red-faced, sweaty, and reaching for a fan.

  1. Mood Swings: One minute you are angry at everyone and everything, the next you are sobbing over spilled coffee. Hormonal fluctuations can make you feel like an emotional pinball, bouncing between joy, rage, and despair at warp speed.

  1. Sleep Problems: Insomnia is another gift from the hormonal gremlins. Whether its trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up at 3 a.m. pondering life’s mysteries, disrupted sleep can make you feel like a zombie all day long.

  1. Brain Fog: Forgotten where you left your keys? Or why you walked into a room? Cognitive glitches are another delightful feature of perimenopause making multitasking a bit more challenging.

  1. Weight Gain: The infamous middle-aged spread. Hormonal changes can slow your metabolism and cause weight to gravitate toward your midsection leaving you longing for the days when carbs didn’t feel like the enemy.

  1. Irregular Periods: Think of your menstrual cycle as a wild card. Periods can become heavier, lighter, longer, shorter or vanish altogether, keeping you guessing.

  1. Vaginal dryness and Decreased Libido: Decreased estrogen can lead to vaginal dryness, making intimacy less comfortable and sometimes less appealing. Don’t worry, there are solutions for this too!

Natural Ways to Tame the Hormonal Chaos

Now that we have laid out part of the laundry list of symptoms, let's talk about ways to navigate this hormonal chaos with a bit of grace, and yes, humor.

  • Eat Like a Champion: Incorporate foods rich in phytoestrogens, (plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen) like flaxseeds, soy, and chickpeas. Add plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to your diet. Avoid sugar and processed foods which can exacerbate symptoms.

  • Move Your Body: Exercise is your best friend during perimenopause. It helps with weight management, boosts mood, and improves sleep. Aim for a mix of cardio, strength training, and yoga to keep your body and mind in sync.

  • Manage Stress: Chronic stress can worsen symptoms like insomnia, and mood swings. Try mindfulness practices, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. Even a good belly laugh can do wonders for your stress levels.

  • Stay Cool: Invest in breathable pajamas, cooling pillows, and fans to help combat night sweats. During the day, layer your clothing to accommodate unexpected heat waves.

  • Sleep Smarter: Establish a bedtime routine that includes turning off screens an hour before bed, keeping your room dark and cool, and avoid caffeine or heavy meals in the evening.

  • Supplement Wisely: Consider supplements like black cohosh, evening primrose oil, or magnesium, which may help with hot flashes, mood and sleep. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Dehydration can amplify symptoms like fatigue and brain fog. Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day.

  • Talk it Out: Whether it’s a friend, partner, or therapist, sharing your experiences can lighten the load. You are not alone, and chances are someone else has a funny or relatable perimenopause story to share.

The Silver Lining Is Coming!

While perimenopause can feel like an endurance test, it is also a time of growth and self-discovery. Many women find themselves reassessing priorities, pursuing new passions, and embracing the wisdom that comes with ages. Think of it as an opportunity to shed what no longer serves you-whether its outdated goals or that sweater you’ve had since high school.

The good news is that perimenopause does not last forever. It's a temporary phase leading to menopause, which for many women, brings relief from the symptoms that have taken over their lives. While you wait for menopause there are Herbs that help with symptoms, as well as, Hormone Replacement Therapy, HRT.

So, grab a fan, sip some herbal tea, read a good book, relax, you have got this!
